DESCRIPTION OF THE CASTLE

The castle (1,715 sqm – 18,453 sqft, 9 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms), dating back to the 11th century, is laid over four floors:

The castle was recently renovated and brought back to its original splendor while fully complying with Italian anti-seismic laws. The halls, with their huge ceilings and the ample windows, are very bright and welcoming.

  FLOOR PLANS OF THE CASTLE

DESCRIPTION OF THE HAMLET

Not far from the castle there is a nice hamlet made up of stone building in various state of repair. Here below you can find a description of the buildings.

The country house N°2 (320 sqm – 3,443 sqft, 4 bedrooms and 1 bathroom) is laid over three floors organized as follows:

- Ground floor: cellar and storage room;

- First floor: living room, dining room, kitchen, three bedrooms and bathroom;

- Second floor: bedroom.

The country house N°3 (120 sqm – 1,291 sqft, 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom) is laid over two floors:

The country house N°4 (210 sqm – 2,260 sqft, 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom) is laid over three floors. Leaned against the building there are several rooms which were in the past used as drying barns for tobacco.

- Basement: cellar and storage room;

- Ground floor: living room, kitchen, dining room, bedroom and bathroom;

- First floor: two bedrooms.

The hamlet is then completed by a former drying barn (130 sqm – 1,399 sqft), a pigsty (45 sqm – 484 sqft) and a warehouse (30 sqm – 323 sqft).

HISTORY OF THE CASTLE

The original castle can be dated back to the 11th century and was built to defend the road connecting the Tiber Valley and Valdarno together with the nearby Castello di Montauto. In the following years, the castle was reworked by the Barbolani di Montauto family so that it could be inhabited as a countryside manor: the property remained in the possession of the family until the 18th century. A fire destroyed the castle in 1178 and the building was only rebuilt in the 16th century, when it had no strategic purpose anymore. Nowadays, the building is a typical fortified villa, quadrangular in shape, with four round towers at its corners.

The 16th century (or even 17th century, as many historians have argued) reconstruction can be deduced by the huge loggia with windows on the upper floor: huge openings and windows were not suitable for a fortress since they offered an easy way in for the enemy in case of a siege and constituted a structural weakness.

EXTERIORS, USE AND POTENTIAL USES

A map of the land surrounding the castle: the borders of the property are highlighted in red.

The castle sits in a beautiful estate of 65.9 hectares (162.8 acres), covered for the most part in mixed woodland (46.0 ha) and arable fields (14.0 ha). Several olives (roughly 5.0 ha in total) allow producing excellent Tuscan olive oil.

Right behind the castle, in a quiet and retired position, there is a beautiful 18 × 5 m swimming pool with dressing room and shower.

The castle, given its retired position and the beautiful finishes, is perfect both as a private luxury house and as an accommodation business. The pool is further bonus, as is the proximity to many of the most interesting cities of Tuscany such as Florence, Arezzo and Siena.

The term Castle derives from castellum which, in turn, derives from Castrum, a Latin term that refers to a military settlement. It is, in fact, in Roman times that we find the first elements of castles, architectural structures that become even more important with the advent of the barbarians. These peoples, nomads and mostly devoted to hunting and war, were also particularly ferocious and it was therefore required to fortify the already existing military facilities.

With the fall of the Roman Empire and the advent of the Middle Ages the decentralization of power required the creation of different types of fortification. At the beginning the scene was dominated by the watch towers whose purpose was primarily military.

The different economic and social structure, typical of the Middle Ages, then, required the creation of fortified towns. The castle became, therefore, the nucleus of a decentralized economy that, from the city, now moved to the countryside. That’s why the castle appeared as real fortified village.

In modern times, with the advent of various forms of fortification, the castle lost its defensive role. The various castles began, therefore, to be converted into residences for noble families.
Currently many of the castles in Italy and Europe are in need of renovation and therefore represent an unique opportunity to give a new life to a piece of history.

Owning a castle, live in a castle and, even more, to revive a castle is surely one of the most exciting experiences of life.
